Engineering notes for your next specification.

Practical questions to resolve before a tender, demonstration or configuration review. These notes guide evaluation; they are not product certification or project design.

Plant controller vs EMS vs SCADA

Assign control, scheduling and operator-visibility duties clearly. Read the role guide →

Plant controller, EMS and SCADA: define the roles.

These functions can share hardware or be distributed. Name each responsibility in the architecture rather than assuming a product label tells you where it lives.

Plant / equipment control

Coordinates commands and equipment limits at the relevant level. Identify the systems responsible for real-time behaviour and independent protection.

Energy management

Uses operating priorities, available energy and configured constraints to inform schedules and coordination. Identify which schedules can become commands and how they are validated.

SCADA / HMI

Provides the operator view, alarms, trends and configured control interfaces. Define permissions, command acknowledgement and the required operational history.

Evaluation question: If the cloud link, station server or an equipment connection fails, which functions continue locally, which stop, and how is the operator informed?

How to specify a BESS control system.

Use this checklist to define a demonstration and acceptance-test scope.

  1. Operating envelope: specify the asset mix, connection duties, modes, battery reserve and equipment limits.
  2. Interfaces: identify BMS, PCS, meters, protection, station systems and external dispatch endpoints, including device and protocol versions.
  3. Data model: agree point names, units, scaling, quality flags, timestamps and alarm priorities.
  4. Control ownership: define command sources, priorities, acknowledgements and rejection of invalid or stale instructions.
  5. Failure behaviour: agree responses to missing measurements, controller restart and lost communications.
  6. Evidence: request a selected-equipment schedule, interface matrix, configuration records and measurable acceptance criteria.
  7. Handover: agree backups, recovery steps, access rights and responsibility for future changes.

For grid-connected plants, the connection requirements, studies and approval process apply to the complete installation.

How to reduce platform dependency.

Turn ownership principles into concrete deliverables.

  • List the operational data and configuration files the asset owner needs to export.
  • Agree formats, access methods, retention and restore procedures.
  • Document licences, hosting boundaries and what happens at contract end.
  • Request an interface inventory so future equipment changes can be assessed.
  • Specify role-based access and controlled remote support, with a change history.
  • Ask for a recovery demonstration using the proposed backup process.
